Global SinoPhoto Awards (GSPA) and Exhibition at Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, UK

My Image Family Home 1 from my Familiar Stranger series (still work in progress) was selected as Highly Commended in the 2021 Global SinoPhoto Awards.

This photo collage explores the physical location of our family home, which was knocked down in the 90s to make way for luxury condo. The image explores the idea of family lineage connected by a physical site.

The image was on display at the Museum of East Asian Art in Bath, UK from February 16 – May 14, 2022.

Below is quoted from MEAA’s Instagram account announcement:

The GSPA panel, who awarded this piece with a Highly Commanded distinction 🥇, reflected:
“This work uses superimposition to disrupt time and space, new and old, past and present in places and people, clearly representing the flow of emotions and memories in an un-changing space” and “Cindy Lin has used photocollage and a mixed media approach her story around her family history. By bringing together old family photographs, sewing and collage she has created a three dimensional photographic object that explores the loss of her family home.”

This image reminds us of the power art has to help us navigate topics such as loss, memories and legacy.

I am very grateful for the opportunity to exhibit my work, in additions to all the press coverage the Awards have garnered:

Exhibition in Rencontres D'Arles 2018: The Family of No Man

The Family of No Man

Special thanks to Cosmos Arles Books for the opportunity to participate in this exhibition.

THE FAMILY OF NO MAN

Re-visioning the world through non-male eyes

The Family of No Man is the culmination of an open call that has brought together 494 female and inter-gender artists from all around the world working in the medium of photography. The aim of this radical curatorial proposition is to revisit Edward Steichen’s original The Family of Man, a seminal photographic exhibition and publication from 1955, which in its time was described “as one of the most ambitious undertakings in an art museum”. Performing the patterns and production modes of the original project, which garnered both appraisal and controversy, The Family of No Man is conceived of as an open-ended physical and virtual platform of how the world today is seen through non-male eyes. The participants’ works are displayed in a series of interactive outdoor and indoor installations while new images, uploaded in real time to an online platform, will constantly update the selection during the Cosmos Arles Books week. This material in tandem with the visitors’ contributions will be deposited in a time capsule. Through its visual discourse, program of talks and parallel actions, The Family of No Man aspires to establish a critical space for an all-inclusive debate on gender equality, photography and its historiography.

Exhibition curated by Brad Feuerhelm and Natasha Christia.

Exhibition: July 2-8, 2018
